Field Service/PLC Controls Engineer (m/f)


Overview of the Role:
The initial role will be to as a Field service engineer, this will be used to gain an understanding of the Knapp automation systems and processes with a view to progressing to being the lead controls engineer within the KNAPP customer service department.
The role purpose is to provide technical expertise for the support of a wide range of automation and control systems implementation activities on new and existing KNAPP equipment and facilities across the KNAPP resident & KNAPP customer sites.
The individual will be a member of the engineering team and will act as the design authority, project member or technical lead on a number of projects for all aspects of automation, instrumentation and control systems from concept, system design, implementation, validation and support transition. Site support is also required and members may be aligned to specific areas acting as second level support contact

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support automation system projects with equipment and application selection, customer management, installation, commissioning, validation and handover in order to deliver to plan and on budget
  • Provide second level support to the existing automation systems to ensure availability targets are met
  • Identify, develop and implement automation system and program changes to support manufacturing processes, investigations and continuous improvement activities
  • Manage, supervise, mentor and coach customers, contractors, technicians and engineers
  • Develop and follow standards and procedures for the automation systems on sites
  • Ensure the validated status of automation assets is maintained by the use of change control and configuration management
  • Ensure site documentation is appropriately managed were necessary
  • Keep up to date with technologies to ensure the appropriate solutions are utilised for maximum business benefit
  • Adhere to current Environment, Health and Safety legislation and KNAPP’s policies and procedures to maintain own, team and public safety
  • Provide process and machinery safety expertise and lead safety assessments where appropriate



  • Bachelors / Masters degree or HNC/HND in IT, Electrical & Electronic, Controls, Automation or Robotics Engineering
  • Experience in Automated Materials Handling or similar regulated, controls environment would be advantageous but is not essential

Preferred qualifications:

  • Controls Engineering skills through to IT infrastructure and applications should include training and/or experience in a selection of the following:
  • Control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, Servo, Vision) for off the shelf and bespoke process and production equipment and materials handling systems
  • Communication networks and protocols (serial, Profibus, Ethernet)
  • Instrumentation (sensors, actuators, PMT)
  • Electrical Design (control panel and field wiring)
  • P&ID nomenclature and electrical wiring diagrams
  • Process and Machinery Safety (CE, PUWER, HAZOP, CHAZOP)
  • Environmental Monitoring Systems
  • Siemens controls systems experience

  • Able to work at various KNAPP sites situated predominately in the UK, although some travel to the R.O.I, Europe or other worldwide locations may be required from time to time.

Technical Requirements:

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in a relevant industry or service
  • Knowledge of working with Office software solutions and PC literate


  • Training will be provided on 3rd party supplier and KNAPP equipment with in the UK at our company headquarters in Graz, Austria
