The Shift Engineer will be required to operate and carry out service maintenance tasks as well as rectification tasks on the Automated Materials Handling Equipment under the guidance of the shift team leader.
Tasks (include the following as guide but list is not exhaustive)
- Start of shift checks ensuring equipment is fit for use
- Powering down safely and correctly to allow product flow faults to be rectified
- Investigate the reasons and re-start the system after an emergency stop (non-technical errors)
- Rectify time-out faults using the manual controllers (Pendant or HMI panel)
- Follow safety procedures when working on and around the Automated Mechanical Handling Equipment, such as isolation of adjoining equipment, and following the ‘safe entry procedure’ and use of correct PPE
- Using access equipment in and around the system to rectify product flow issues
- Machine Housekeeping (cleanliness), removal of any objects that would interfere with product flow, such as pieces of pallet and cling film, to ensue product flow is not impeded
- Report issues to the control room for issuing or escalation to the engineering partners for rectification
- Communication of faults and system availability.
- Notifying the Error Handler partners of faults and their locations.
- Escalation of faults to the engineering partners.
- Notifying the control room of the rectification of faults and the return to service of the equipment.
- Carry out MHE equipment servicing in accordance to the Knapp standards as set out in the equipment manuals
- Completion of MHE equipment training in accordance to the Knapp standards as set out in the equipment manuals
- To complete the relevant service records.
- Resolve within a reasonable time any equipment faults – Mechanical / Electrical / Electronic / PLC / PC
- Prioritise System faults
- To Ensure Compliance with Health and Safety Legislation
- Ensure Quality of Workmanship to Knapp Standards
- To complete all reports as requested on time and correct.
- To complete entries in to the Key maintenance system, on time and 100% accurately
- Involvement in continual improvement activities – small works – projects as instructed
- Maintain operational availability at all times as far as is reasonably practical and safe, in compliance with all legislative requirements
- To ensure all onsite spares are maintained at optimum levels – use of Key maintenance system is mandatory
- Follow the onsite communication protocol to ensure the operation is kept informed of all issue. The engineering communication protocol plays a vital part
- in the efficient running of a DC the engineer must adhere to these communication protocols, to ensure compliance with Health and safety at work regulations. Use of a handheld radio and a PDA linked to the Key system is provided for this use.
- It is important that the engineering department record and document the activities that are being undertaken on the equipment within the DC therefore the use of the Key asset management system will need to be maintained by the Engineer. This will provide an overview of service activities during the shifts
- including problems occurred and their associated resolutions. .
- As part of the training programme fulfilment, completion of staged practical tests, upkeep of a job log and the requirement to deliver structured reports to
- a deadline will be mandatory in this role.
Shift Handover Meetings
- Attendance/participation at the shift handover meetings ,toolbox, briefings and meeting with engineering colleagues to enable the shift technicians to receive instruction and to relay any concerns and/or problems within the Automated Mechanical Handling equipment, or their task roles.
Requirements and Guidelines
- The engineers must be instructed and trained for the tasks assigned to them and on the possible hazards resulting from incorrect use of procedures or work in carrying out their tasks.
- The engineers are to be instructed on the necessary protection devices, protective measures, relevant regulations, accident prevention regulations, PUWER regulations and operating conditions
- 100% attendance to planned training courses is a mandatory requirement.
- Engineers work under the guidance of the shift team leaders.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications
- Numerate and Literate, able to use computer equipment
Able and responsible to work on own initiative – to be a self-starter
- Clear spoken voice and auditory comprehension
- Experience in a warehousing, engineering or automation environment would be advantageous.
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical, electrical & electronic technical manuals & drawings mandatory
- ONC/HNC/City & Guilds, B–Tech or NVQ’s in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or recognised industry equivalent
- Experienced in automation maintenance engineering, commissioning and testing.
- Apprentice trained, approved training courses followed
- Skills in objective setting and target completion
- Health and safety trained in automated equipment
- Basic understanding of PLC equipment desired (not programmer)
