Technology for pharmacy experts: Automation delivers
excellence in pharmaceutical supply at PEAK PHARMACY
With their new DC at headquarters in Chesterfield, PEAK PHARMACY is clearly preparing their logistics for the future. The system is designed for automated prescription filling, temperature-controlled storage and centrally supplies 135 local pharmacies as well as the company’s online pharmacy, all in a space of 10,800 m² (116,250 ft²). The solution KNAPP developed was selected from among 8 competitors as it delivers high process reliability, scalability and efficiency. Thousands of packages of medicinal products can be processed on a daily basis – including MDS-preparations and direct deliveries to patients. The automated infrastructure makes a palpable difference to the pharmacy team while making reliable, overnight delivery in compliance with the MHRA regulations possible. The system marks a milestone in modern patient pharmaceutical services.

Central warehouse processes
1) Systematic putaway
Incoming deliveries are announced in the ERP system and booked in KiSoft. The goods are automatically put away where they are needed, whether to overstock, the Central Belt System or the manual picking area – smart replenishment included.
2) Efficient picking in the Central Belt System
Around 67 % of the total volume is picked centrally in the CBS. The items pass by the manual stations and proceed to either packing or directly to shipping.

3) Automated packing for patients
At the Pack2Patient lines, orders are packed for individual patients, a process including registration, labeling, sorting and several quality control processes.
4) Ready to ship with precision
Shipping containers are automatically closed, labeled and strapped and then conveyed to the loading ramp where they are ready for delivery as scheduled.

Pack2Patient – precision focused on the patient
The Pack2Patient technology is a central component of the automation at Peak Pharmacy allowing semi-automatic picking for patients outside of the pharmacy. Working at the ergonomically designed work stations, employees manually transfer the items to the system, which automatically labels, allocates, sorts and packs them. The intelligent camera system records barcodes, 2D and 3D codes and a photo of the medication for maximum traceability and process reliability. The solution makes work easier for personnel, increases efficiency and helps Peak Pharmacy deliver great service with reliable next-day delivery.
Partners on equal terms

The choice of technology supplier was clear. Joe Cattee, Managing Director of Peak Pharmacy, and his team evaluated 8 suppliers.
From the very beginning of the project, the work together was marked by mutual trust, transparency and a deep understanding of the goals that the two companies shared. As family-run companies with upfront values, KNAPP and PEAK PHARMACY met as equals – with open dialog, clear communication and a strong commitment to implementing the strategic plan. PEAK PHARMACY’s decision in favor of KNAPP was made after the careful evaluation of 8 providers, and the innovative technology, high system competence and a dedicated team proved the decision a good one. Their contact person at KNAPP could always be reached, and so a close, trusting relationship developed that extends beyond the initial project. KNAPP acts not only as a reliable supplier, but also as a true partner – a partner with a shared goal of implementing a scalable, patient-focused logistics solution fit for the future.
We looked at many suppliers at the beginning of our journey. KNAPP had the best solution for the volume that we wanted to handle through the hub.
