Heritage Pharmacy Apotheke Lind
Relies on Digitalization

The relocation to their new premises provided Apotheke Lind the opportunity to optimize their internal processes from the ground up. In their back office, the company previously relied on conventional pharmacy drawer cabinets, had the same item stored in several locations and managed expiry dates manually – procedures that cost a great deal of time and regularly pulled the pharmacy team away from customer consulting. At the same time, the pressure was on for more efficiency, transparency and more effective space utilization.

To master these challenges and to fulfill the high standards in quality of service at the pharmacy, they decided to modernize their storage facilities with the ApoStore automated picking system. Automation shortened paths and accelerated procedures while creating more space, both physical and mental: The pharmacy staff now has more time to dedicate to their customers.

Overview of processes

1) Overview of processes

Putaway, depending on requirements, is either fully or semi-automatic. Packages are moved through the Feeder OCR into a collecting point from which they are automatically separated, scanned and precisely positioned in the storage system by the gripper – in a process that’s rapid, reliable and requires no manual sorting. Alternatively, the medicinal products can be put away semi-automatically through shutters. All items are uniquely identified, and lots and expiry dates are recorded in the system. The result is optimized, space-effective storage in the system with maximal transparency.

2) Retrieval

Retrieval is triggered automatically when a prescription is scanned. The inventory control system transmits the order directly to the ApoStore A1000, which picks up the medication within seconds and transports it to one of the four sales counters. All this time, the team is completely focused on the customer – trips to the back to get items are completely eliminated. All item retrievals can be traced via the monitor interface, and the system furthermore reports expiring items, ensuring reliable stock-keeping information at all times.

3) Optimal storage in minimal space

Apotheke Lind profits from the ApoStore A1000 having very dense, intelligently organized storage. Around 15,000 packs are space-effectively stored in the compact system, which is significantly smaller than solutions using conventional pharmacy drawer cabinets. The robot analyzes each medicinal product during the putaway process and automatically selects the optimal position based on its dimensions, picking frequency and turnover. This results in a dynamic storage system that continuously optimizes itself.

4) Efficient use of all available space

The ApoStore also completely handles the management of expiry dates and reports expiring packs well ahead of time. This intelligent combination of space optimization, process reliability and digitalized stock management ensures maximum oversight of the back office and allows the team to effectively use every bit of available space.

We place great value on the work that goes on in the pharmacy, so making the pharmacy processes transparent was very important to us.
