Jan, IT & Software Implementation Engineer, International Customer Service

What are your main responsibilities?

Jan: My main responsibility as an IT & software implementation engineer is accompanying our customers on their journey to finding the optimal software solution – from the initial inquiry to successful implementation.

Since every customer, and therefore every warehouse, is unique, software requirements can vary quite a bit. Providing the ideal solution for each warehouse means creating customer-specific solutions. The process starts when we receive a change request from the customer. Our first step is evaluating whether the request is technically feasible and whether it’s a good idea. Once that’s done, I get to work on implementing the change in the software and checking the changes in the test system to make sure they all work. During this phase, it’s important that I remain in close contact with the customer to answer any questions I have and to make sure the solution aligns with their request. After testing is completed, we roll out the change to the live system.

Another exciting part of my job is doing quality assurance for our software solutions, which includes the continual improvement of our test processes. Our goal is to always improve the efficiency of our processes and find potential for optimization. More efficiency and quality means even better software solutions for our customers.

What are the requirements for this job? (qualifications, previous knowledge, interests)

Jan: It’s very important to be highly solution-oriented and to have basic IT knowledge. I should also say that you can definitely learn everything you need to know and always continue to develop your skills at this job.

The qualifications and hard skills you need are:

  • A diploma from a secondary (e.g. HTL) or tertiary (e.g. FH, university) technical institution or equivalent work experience
  • Programming skills (C++, Java) and experience with databases (Oracle, SQL) are advantageous
  • Very good command of German and English

Soft skills and personal characteristics are also very important for IT & software implementation engineers. My colleagues and I all love IT and we always enjoy exchanging ideas when we’re working together to find a solution. If that sounds like you, you’ll fit right in with our team!

What does an average day at work look like?

Jan: At work, I’m in constant contact with customers and with my colleagues. My team and I start off every morning together by discussing what our customers requested the previous day and what solutions we found. By sharing this information, we can help each other out, learn from one another and work together to find the best solutions for our customers. For me, that’s exactly what makes my job so great: getting to solve everyday challenges together with my colleagues and knowing that I can always rely on them.

Apart from working in the office, I also get to go on business trips to visit my customers’ warehouses. This gives me a chance to get to know each warehouse better – because you can only really understand the system once you’ve seen it for yourself. I also provide on-site training for other colleagues, such as our Logistics Operations Engineers. I teach them how to handle our software solutions. Being an IT & software implementation engineer means I also get to visit our international customers and get to know new places in all these different contexts.

My average day at work is never just average – there’s always something new or interesting to do. Because I’m in such close contact with our customers, there are always new situations and new challenges to deal with, and that’s what makes the job so interesting.

In your opinion, why does this job have good prospects for the future?

Jan: I think this job has a promising future because software and customer service are becoming more and more important to intralogistics. A highly automated warehouse has a number of systems that have to work together smoothly.

That’s what makes my role as an IT & software implementation engineer so interesting: working on solutions that directly impact the customer’s system performance and improving their processes for the future. All the while, technology and customer requirements are continuing to evolve. That means I’m always learning new things while helping to shape the future of intralogistics.

What do you like most about your job? And what challenges you?

Jan:

Communication, communication, communication

What I really like about my job is communicating with many different people. Whether I’m talking about solution strategies with my colleagues or discussing a change request with my customers, I’m always communicating. It’s an important part of the job and one I personally really like.

Personal growth

The opportunities for further development at KNAPP are endless. You’re always learning something new and always growing to meet new challenges.

And what really motivates me is noticing how I have grown as an engineer. One of my favorite moments was knowing that I had improved a multi-million-euro system when I was just 23. Fulfilling the customer requests for that was a challenge for sure, but at the end of the day, it was a major personal success!

Ready for the next stage of your career?

Thanks to Jan, you’ve gotten a look at what working as an IT & software implementation engineer is like. International customers, innovative software solutions, interesting projects and plenty of room for personal and professional growth make this job so exciting for him.
