As part of the 11th Logistics Innovation Day that took place in 2016 in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen selected KNAPP as top innovator in the area of logistics innovations. The innovation scouting focused on new logistical approaches and IT concepts. Of the 18 finalists, KNAPP convinced the panel with its autonomous, flexible shuttles.

Leading logistics managers from 119 companies worldwide that belong to the Volkswagen group gathered at the Logistics Innovation Day to present their developments and pilot projects. Efficient logistical processes are especially in demand in the automotive sector, where increasing digitalization is also opening up completely new possibilities. VW also invited external companies to submit their logistics innovations in order to identify these trends and to explore new technologies.

With its innovative shuttle concept, KNAPP stood head and shoulders above 128 other competitors in a process involving several stages that included concept presentations, hearings and factory visits. Together with 18 other finalists, KNAPP was invited to Wolfsburg for the Logistics Innovation Day to present the new shuttle solution.

Take Away is the name of the concept for the flow of goods comprising the Open Shuttle transport system and the flexible 3D-moving YLOG-Shuttle. With this concept, the entire warehouse can be automated with direct connections to the work stations in production. The two systems work together to provide a continuous supply to the production lines. KNAPP came out on top from the finals as Top Innovator of the Volkswagen Logistic Innovations Scouting.

Christian Brauneis, Director of Business Unit Industry Solutions at KNAPP, commented on the innovation day participation: “Combining the highly flexible storage system YLOG-Shuttle System with the highly flexible transport system Open Shuttle offers an ideal solution for the automatic supply to production work stations. Receiving the award for Top Innovator really motivates and strengthens us to continue our work developing the autonomous shuttles.
